Green Building
While more and more industries are concerning
themselves with the idea of sustainable
resources and low environmental impact, we
have been practicing the "green" philosophy for
over a decade.  There are several options in a
new custom home or remodel than can help
lessen your environmental impact, and even
save a dollar or two! Please don't forget to ask
us how we can incorporate these technologies
into your home.
Geothermal
Heating/Cooling-

Although the technology has
been around for years, it has
recently become more
financially feasible due to
more competition, and
higher payback when used
in conjunction with super
insulation.  The earth’s
temperature, usually around
55 °F (13 °C), can be used
to either heat or cool a
building. Depending on the
climate, a heat pump can be
used to either draw up or
send down heat. These heat
pumps act like solar hot
water systems, using a liquid
to transfer heat. For climates requiring cooling, the heat pump takes the heat from the
building and transfers it via the fluid into the cooler earth. The opposite occurs when a home
needs heating. The heat pump will draw heat from the earth and pump it up to the building to
be used for either a forced air or radiant system.  The payback on investment will usually
take less time the larger the house is.
Expanding Foam / Icynene
Insulation -
Icynene® is the leading
100% water-blown foam insulation that
minimizes air leakage for increased
energy efficiency, creates a healthier
indoor environment, reduces airborne
sounds and offers greater design
freedom. Icynene® maintains its
performance with no loss of R-value
over time. It does not shrink, sag or
settle. Icynene® adheres to most
construction materials and is the perfect
insulation for walls, attics, ceilings and
floors.  Icynene® expands to 100 times
its volume in seconds to fill every crack
and crevice while remaining flexible so
that the integrity of the building
envelope seal remains intact over time.
Ellery Esposito Construction is a
preferred builder by Icynene®.  More
information can be found at the
Icynene
Website.
Structural insulated panels
(SIPs) are high performance
building panels used in floors,
walls, and roofs for residential and
light commercial buildings. The
panels are typically made by
sandwiching a core of rigid foam
plastic insulation between two
structural skins of oriented strand
board (OSB). Other skin material
can be used for specific purposes.
SIPs are manufactured under
factory controlled conditions and
can be custom designed for each
home. The result is a building
system that is extremely strong,
energy efficient and cost
effective. Savings are also
realized because less expensive
heating and cooling systems are
required with
SIP construction.
Less air leakage means fewer
drafts, less noise, lower energy
bills, and a much more
comfortable indoor environment.
Ellery Esposito Construction uses
FischerSIPS panels.  You can find

Insulating concrete forms
(ICFs)
are rigid plastic foam
forms that hold concrete in
place during curing and remain
in place afterwards to serve as
thermal insulation for concrete
walls. The foam sections are
lightweight and result in
energy-efficient, durable
construction.  ICFs consist of
insulating foam, commonly
expanded polystyrene (EPS) or
extruded polystyrene (XPS).
Typical insulation values range
from R-17 to R-26, compared
to between R-13 and R-19 for
most wood-framed walls,
therefore making the entire
structure very energy efficient.
